Gaziantep cuisine is being carried into the future through education.
Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality provides training on geographical indications and branding to course participants to preserve the city's gastronomic heritage. The Municipality continues its educational initiatives to safeguard the deep-rooted culinary culture of Gaziantep—ranked among the world's premier gastronomic cities—and to pass it on to future generations accurately. In this context, awareness-raising sessions are organized regarding the authenticity of Gaziantep cuisine, the importance and protection of products with geographical indications, and branding processes. Comprehensive information on preserving the city's gastronomic heritage is shared during programs conducted by the Product Branding and Geographical Indications Branch Directorate—operating under the Department of Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development—for trainees in the "Local Cuisine" branch of the Gaziantep Art and Vocational Training Courses (GASMEK). A total of 92 trainees have been reached so far across seven training programs held since January 2026. Participants received instruction on the commercial and cultural value of geographical indication emblems and registrations, the importance of preparing local recipes using authentic ingredients and traditional techniques, maintaining quality standards for registered products, and the principles of sustainable production. Additionally, 170 trainees received in-person briefings through 11 training programs conducted in 2025. The ultimate goal is to carry Gaziantep cuisine into the future through proper practices; by raising awareness among local cooks and aspiring chefs regarding products with geographical indications, the Municipality aims to ensure the city's gastronomic heritage is kept alive through correct methods. The planned training sessions will continue throughout the year. Gaziantep, Turkey’s leader in geographical indications—holding the highest number of registered geographical indications in the country with 109+1 products—continues to sustain its success in gastronomy on the international stage. The city has five products registered by the European Union: Antep Baklava, Antep Pistachio Paste, Gaziantep Menengiç Coffee, Araban Garlic, and Antep Lahmacun. These registrations serve as a testament to the authenticity and quality of Gaziantep cuisine on an international scale.
